Speaking generally, we are interested in élan, humor, and caprice. We believe the way something is written is internal to what it wants to do. We believe in la gaya scienza, an art that is mocking, light, fleeting, and divinely untroubled.
All this would be named after la gaya scienza if there were a decent English translation of the phrase. We must instead resort to a calque of the phrase dolce stil novo, or sweet new style. Although New Style may be disinterested in fin'amor and lofty light.
